Flag fashion is often seen as a fashion accessory for occasions of sport or for holiday celebrations that celebrate the country. Consider American flag bikinis that come out for July 4th parties as well as Brazilian flag T-shirts worn during the FIFA World Cup. "It's easy to fall into the false belief that flags are simply innocent representations of our country of origin or our nationality," says Sabrina Strings, an Associate Professor of Sociology at University of California, Irvine. But, certain BIPOC and immigrant communities can create a powerful political statement by displaying their flag on the chest, sleeves or even the back.
