Gmail is the first choice of every webmail user. Nothing can beat the user-friendly interface and unique set of features of the Gmail service. One of the best features of Gmail is that you can configure your Gmail account to a third-party email service like Outlook.

However, it is necessary to follow the right procedure to connect your Gmail account to Outlook. Incorrect IMAP or POP settings will lead to technical glitches due to which your Gmail will not work properly in Outlook. So, here we have compiled a step-by-step guide for you to configure Gmail in Outlook successfully.

Step-by-step Guide to Configure Gmail Account in Outlook

Learn how to configure Gmail in Outlook by following the given steps. The first step is to enable IMAP (Internet Messaging Access Protocol) in Gmail. IMAP is responsible for enabling communication between the mail server and the email client. So, if you don’t enable this setting, then your Outlook will not connect to your Gmail account.

  • First of all, login to your Gmail account
  • Click the gear icon located on the top right corner
  • Select Forwarding POP/IMAP tab and enable IMAP option
  • Save Changes

Once your Gmail account is prepared, it’s time to add your account to Outlook. Follow these steps and complete the configuration process.

  • Open Outlook and log in
  • Tap on File and choose Add Account
  • Choose Manual setup or additional server types and click Next
  • Now, select POP or IMAP in the next window and click Next
  • Enter your server, user and login information and locate Test Account Settings
  • Then, check the box next to Automatically test account settings when Next is clicked.
  • Once done, click on More Settings and you will land to the Internet E-mail settings box.
  • Visit Outgoing Server and check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
  • Choose the Use same settings as my incoming mail server
  • Go to the Advanced tab. Now, set up the Incoming server (IMAP) to 993 and then the Outgoing server (SMTP) to 465.
  • Select SSL as the encrypted connection type. Tap on OK and Next.
  • After waiting for Outlook to test your connection, get the all clear in order to proceed. Tap on Close
  • Click Finish

It’s done! Congratulations, you have successfully configured your Gmail account in Outlook. However, if you are unable to configure Gmail in Outlook, then check for the internet connection. Probably it is because of poor internet connection that you are not able to connect. Also, make sure you have followed the right configuration steps as discussed above and not missed anything. Apart from this, make sure you have entered the correct login credentials. Furthermore, ensure you have enabled the IMAP settings in Gmail first, before connecting it to Outlook.
