Market Potential and Pitfalls

Syngas, which is short for synthesis gas, is a variable mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen. Usually, hydrogen and the two carbon gases make up the majority of the volume of syngas, with methane and nitrogen only present in small amounts. Syngas is an industrial gas formed from various forms of feedstock and is widely used to produce various industrial chemicals, including fertilizers, solvents, fuels, and other synthetic materials. The growing demand for syngas in chemical synthesis applications is likely to be the major driver for the global syngas market over the forecast period. The growing demand for industrial chemicals such as urea, ethanol, and methanol is likely to be a major driver for the syngas market over the forecast period.

The use of plastic waste in the production of syngas is another major driver for the global syngas market and is likely to boost the market’s growth in the coming years. Worldwide, the problem of plastic waste has caught the attention of the public and governments alike, with the growing urban landscape leading to the generation of ever increasing volumes of plastic waste and plastic pollution showing no signs of slowing down. Syngas production offers a viable solution for this problem, with plastic waste being regenerated into syngas and subsequently being converted into industrial chemicals. This is likely to be a major driver for the global syngas market over the forecast period, as governments are likely to become increasingly serious about tackling the problem of plastic waste over the coming years, as environmental awareness grows and the problem of plastic waste comes to the fore.

On the other hand, the high costs of syngas production are likely to be a major restraint against the market in the coming years. Developing countries are likely to hold the high costs of syngas production against the technology, leading to the market being centered on North America and Western Europe, as well as leading economies in Asia Pacific.

Syngas Market Market  - Geographical Analysis :-

A geographical outlining of the global syngas market covers the Asia Pacific, North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East Africa (MEA).

The Asia Pacific region dominates the global market due to the availability of raw materials and high demand for power generation in this region. High demand for fertilizers in the major agriculture-based economies like India, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam is also fueling the demand for syngas. In this report, Australia and New Zealand have been organized as one segment. Other country-specific markets of note in this region are China and Japan.

During the forecast period, the market in Europe and North America is expected to grow significantly due to the high demand for syngas as an intermediate for the production of chemicals. Such chemicals are used in many end-use industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, electronics, and military defense. In North America, the USA and Canada generate maximum market revenue. The major market share in this region is held by France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain, and the UK. Research on the remaining countries in Europe featured in this report estimate the strong contribution to market revenue from some other countries of this region.

In the MEA region, the market is meager due to lack of technical knowledge, lack of skilled professionals, and low development. Priority country-specific markets in this region are Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, North Africa, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and the UAE. An assessment of the remaining countries in the MEA region featured in this report anticipates a decent contribution to market revenue from some other countries.

Industry News:

Jan 2022 London-listed Oracle Power has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Pakistan's Sui Southern Gas Co (SSGC) to develop a synthetic natural gas (syngas) project utilizing coal from Thar. The MoU establishes the basis for Oracle and SSGC to explore and carry out feasibility studies for the potential development, owning, operating, and sale of syngas from Thar coal to the Pakistani state-owned company. Syngas produced would be integrated into SSGC's transmission and a distribution network that delivers indigenous natural gas and regasified LNG to domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers.

Jan 2022 UK chemicals company Johnson Matthey Plc said that it had launched its reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) technology to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) and green hydrogen into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The company said that its proprietary HyCOgen RWGS technology is combined with the FT CANS Fischer Tropsch technology, developed with oil-and-gas major Bp Plc. It offered as an integrated solution to convert CO2 into hydrocarbon fuels. HyCOgen is a catalyzed process to convert green hydrogen and CO2 into carbon monoxide, combined with additional hydrogen to form synthesis gas also called syngas. In conjunction with FT CAN, the process can turn over 95% of the carbon dioxide into high-quality synthetic crude oil.

In May 2020, Linde PLC started a new syngas processing facility with an investment of USD 250 million in Southern Louisiana, United States. This is used for supplying carbon monoxide and hydrogen to different global chemical companies.

On 15 January 2019, Celanese Corporation decided to acquire a 365 tons per annum syngas production unit from the prominent company Linde PLC which is located in Pasadena, Texas, US. This acquisition helps the Celanese Corporation to produce raw materials for the world’s largest acetyl intermediates production facility.
